Mrs. Rachel Armstrong Jacobs, 92, died June 27, 2018, in Clinton, SC. She was born in Fountain Inn, SC to Charles Dial and Esther Verdin Armstrong. As a child, Rachel was a member of Fairview Presbyterian Church and attended the local schools of Fountain Inn and the University of South Carolina.
Rachel married the late Lieutenant Wesley Hartwell Johnson, a Citadel graduate, who died in service to his country in Korea. They had a daughter, Diane. Rachel lived and worked, in Greenville, SC for 18 years where she was known to have the prettiest garden in the neighborhood. She was an active member of Second Presbyterian Church, where she worked with the Youth Program and taught Sunday school. Rachel loved taking care of her roses, sewing, watercolor painting, and restoring antique furniture.
In 1971, Rachel married the late Hugh Shockley Jacobs, moved to Clinton, SC, and became a dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church. They joined the Presbyterian Home Community in 1993. She is survived by her children: Diane Johnson Morgan (Samuel) of Savannah, GA, Edna Jacobs Banes (Warren) of Montreat, NC, and Hugh S. Jacobs Jr. of Columbia, SC. A sister, Esther Armstrong Presher of Greenville, SC and sister in law, Erna Jacobs of Clinton, SC. Grandchildren: Virginia P. Zart(Nicolas), Anne P. Moore(Jason), Sims Banes (Shawn Lamason), Brett Banes, Natasha Morgan Ganem(Stephen), and seven great grandchildren. A special thanks to her niece Mary Jane Bates (Jim), and many nieces and nephews who adored her.
Rachel was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings: Charles Armstrong, Louise Hodder, Dorothy Vela, Eleanor Wood, Marjorie Chamberlain, Verdin Armstrong, Donald Armstrong, Rodney Armstrong, and Wendell Armstrong.
A memorial service will be held July 3, 2018 at 2:00 at the First Presbyterian Church in Clinton.
