Retired Brigadier General Rupert Coleman Campbell, Sr., 80, died Monday, June 15, 2009 at his home.
He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Wilma Lee Campbell.
He was born in Newberry County and was the son of the late Andrew Pinckney Campbell and Althea Lominick Campbell Hollingsworth. Mr. Campbell was a member of Rocky Springs Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder, Sunday School Teacher and Choir member.
He retired with the rank of Brigadier General from the South Carolina National Guard. He was a member of the Employer Support Guard & Reserve team. In 1984 he was inducted as a Charter member in Palmetto Military Academy’s Hall of Fame.
Mr. Campbell was a Board Member of the Laurens County Farm Bureau Association, a Past President of the Laurens County Cattleman’s Association and also Past President of the Laurens County Fair Association. He was a longtime member and past President of the Laurens Exchange Club. For many years he owned and operated a Registered Angus Cattle Farm.
Mr. Campbell was Past President of the Laurens County Shrine Club and a member of Palmetto Lodge #19.
At the time of his death he was very active in and served as treasurer of the Gideon’s of Clinton.
Surviving are one son, Rupert C. Campbell, Jr. and wife Terri of Huntsville, AL; three daughters, Desiree C. Avery and husband, Joey, Kim C. Lambert and husband, Stuart, Andrea C. Baumberger and husband Dale all of Laurens; granddaughter, Elena A Crowe and husband Brian, grandson, Jay C. Avery and Brittany Wagoner; great-grandchildren, Kortney, Hunter and Ella Crow, and Peyton Avery; two brothers, Wilber Campbell and wife, Beverly of California, Ordie R. Campbell and wife, Betty of Whitmire and a sister-in-law, Victoria Campbell of Whitmire.
Mr. Campbell was predeceased by three brothers, Duane McCullough, Loraine McCullough and Ellerbe Campbell and two sisters, Athalee Worthy and Bessie (Tot) Stone.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday,at 11:00 a.m., June 18th at Rocky Springs Presbyterian Church with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
