Richard H. Gams age 73, of Waterloo, South Carolina., passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at his home.
Richard, lovingly known as “Pokey” by his family and friends, was born in Canisteo, NY and was a son of the late William F. and Beatrice Ridgeway Gams.
Richard retired from Norfolk Southern railroad in New York with 35 years of service. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and was a member of the American Legion. He was a member of the St. Mark United Methodist Church. Richard enjoyed being outdoors. He loved camping, fishing, and hunting. He was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox and enjoyed a friendly rivalry with his sons (both Yankees fans). Most of all, Richard loved spending time with his family and watching his grandson, Jake, play soccer. He was a generous, kind-hearted man who had a quick laugh and a bright smile for everyone.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 39 years, Beth (Rynders) Gams; two sons, Matthew Gams (Sarah Schumacher) of Irmo, SC and Scott Gams (Jin Zheng) of Greenville, SC; a grandson, Jacob Matthew Gams; a brother, Robert Gams of New York; two sisters, Helen Dineen of Florida and Cindy Scorsolini of New Jersey, and his nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, William Gams, and a sister, Beatrice Kay Smith.
Visitation is Saturday, March 17th from 1:00-2:00 pm at Gray Funeral Home Chapel of Laurens, SC with a memorial service immediately following. Interment with military honors will be at Westview Memorial Park.
