Richard E. Kohn Jr.

June 22, 1942 — August 21, 2019

Richard E. Kohn, Jr., age 77, passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at his home.
He was born in Newberry, SC and was a son of the late Richard E. Kohn, Sr. and Inez Kelley Kohn.

Richard was truly devoted to his family, community, and beloved Gamecocks. He graduated with a Bachelors Degree from The University of South Carolina and enjoyed attending many home and away baseball and football games over the years. Richard dedicated his life and career to the development, organization, and leadership of youth athletics in the Columbia area and across the state of South Carolina. His leadership legacy lives on in the countless lives he helped shape through his service with the City of Columbia Recreation Department, Irmo-Chapin Recreation Commission (Seven Oaks Park), and South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA). He was a former Deputy Commissioner of Dixie Boys Baseball, having served for decades wherever he was needed within the organization, and was bestowed the honor of Lifetime Member.

Richard is survived by his wife, Audrey Kohn, and their combined six children and families, Guy Kohn (Shannon, Tanner, Loftin), Flynt Kohn, Kim Nunnery (Kenny, Kendra), Paula Gardner (Jeff, Sarah), Paul “Trey” Truesdale (Darlene, Tracy, Haley), and Sarah Faye Truesdale. He is also survived and remembered by his two brothers, Larry Kohn (Joann, Kelley, Kristin, Carla, Jessica) and Randy Kohn (Pat, Courtney, previously deceased Casey), and by his first wife, Lynda Kohn.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 2:00 PM at the Gray Funeral Home Chapel of Whitmire, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. There will be a private family burial at the Whitmire Cemetery.

The family will be accepting flowers at the funeral home or in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in honor of Richard Kohn to: Dixie Boys Baseball–Bernie Varnadore Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 8263, Dothan, AL 36304
