Robert Morris Clayton, Sr.
Robert Morris Clayton, Sr., age 86, passed away Wednesday, December 26th at Martha Franks Retirement Community.
Mr. Clayton was the son of Frederick Van Clayton and Emily Inez Morris Clayton and was born in Pickens, SC on June 11, 1926. He was a Civil Engineering graduate of Clemson College in 1949 and served as a Quartermaster in the U.S. Navy during WWII on a troop transport in the South Pacific. Mr. Clayton was also a Post Master in Laurens for 36 years and a Laurens County Surveyor for many years. He was a member and past Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church in Laurens and was married to Margaret Wallace Clayton, now deceased.
Surviving are his son, Robert Morris Clayton, Jr., M.D. married to Mary Alice Marett Clayton; grandson John Morris Clayton, PhD. married to Jennifer Steed Clayton; great-granddaughter Addison Marett Clayton; granddaughter Cary Lea Clayton married to Donovan Zimmerman; great-granddaughter Althea Grace Clayton; daughter, Elizabeth Clayton Smith married to Steven George Smith; grandson Adam Ganyard Smith married to Elizabeth Clark Smith; and granddaughter Rachel Amanda Smith.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, December 28th, 2012 at the Sharon United Methodist Church Cemetery in Central, SC.
The family will be at the home of Betsy Clayton Smith, 302 Northwind Court, Salem, SC, 29676.
