Sam Olin Owens, age 73 of 227 Dogwood Circle died Tuesday, June 5th at his home.
He was born in Greer, SC and was a son of the late David and Grace Dye Owens.
Mr. Owens was a retried employee of Clinton Mills with 44 years of service. He participated for 50 years as an Official with the South Carolina High School League, being honored by his colleagues to serve two terms on the Executive Committee of the SC High School League. Mr. Owens was recognized for his accomplishments as an Official by being inducted in 1999 into the National High School Sports Hall of Fame, also in 1999 the S.C. Football Officials Association Hall of Fame in 2002 the S.C. Basketball Officials Association Hall of Fame and in 2004 the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame.
Mr. Owens was a local historian, founder and curator of the Clinton Museum and author of Images of America, Clinton . He was a member and deacon of the Calvary Baptist Church and a veteran of the South Carolina National Guard.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Cleo Bratcher Owens of the home; a son, Mike Owens and wife Sheryl of Clinton; a daughter, Robin Owens Martin and husband, Philip of Gray Court; a brother, Truman Owens and wife Pat of Clinton; four grandchildren, Michael and Avery Owens, Nathan Crocker and Brandon Martin.
Funeral service will be conducted Thursday, June 7th at 11:00 a.m. in the Calvary Baptist Church, with entombment in the Pinelawn Memory Gardens.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Officials of the South Carolina High School League.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
