Shirley Mae Brasher Westermeier, age 87, widow of Joseph "Joe" Casper Westermeier, passed away on May 29, 2024 at Presbyterian Community of SC – Clinton.
She was born August 10, 1936 in Carterville, Illinois and was the daughter of late Ernest Lee and Eva Lee Edwards Brasher. She grew up in Herrin, Illinois and was educated in the schools of Herrin Illinois.
She is survived by her son Dale Casper Westermeier (Jan) of Fountain Inn, SC; her daughter Gayla Sue Burnett (Tom) of Cloverdale, IN; her sister, Ladonna Bennett of Herrin IL; her brother-in-law James Taylor Westermeier (Carol) of Simpsonville, SC; her four grandchildren Tabetha Ann Speer (Andrew) of Indianapolis ,IN, Christopher Dale Cummings of Indianapolis, IN, Kelly Wilson Prestel (Joel) of Fountain lnn, SC; William Casper Westermeier of Fountain Inn SC, five great grandchildren Shane Christopher and Joseph Dale Burgoon of Indianapolis, IN, Alexander Dale Cummings of Cazenovia ,NY; Twins James and Drew Prestel of Fountain Inn, SC.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband of 72 years and her parents, a son "Baby Boy" Westermeier, five brothers, Ernie, Otis, John, Leon and William; three sisters, Mary Jatt, Imogen Wyatt and Geraldine Lefler.
As a military wife, she accompanied her husband to several army posts and three tours in Germany during the Cold War. During this time she was active and held various offices in the Girl Scouts, wives clubs and bowling leagues. While at Fort Jackson SC, she spent many hours volunteering at Moncrief Army Hospital and Community Service. After retirement, for 11 years she and Joe spent Monday evenings working with teenagers at Connie Maxwell Childrens Home in Greenwood, SC.
Shirley loved to travel, whether it was visiting family or friends stateside or overseas travel vacations. She loved playing cards, bowling, dancing, watching Clemson football, and especially entertaining and traveling with the grands.
For several years, her home was decorated like a Christmas Wonderland which included a 12 foot fresh cut Frasier Fur tree of lights and hundreds of ornaments. In later years the tree was replaced with a smaller white artificial tree decorated with sterling silver ornaments and red birds.
Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, June 7, 2024 at M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson, SC.
