S. James Von Hollen

S. James Von Hollen, widower of Nancy Griffin Von Hollen, died at NHC Healthcare in Clinton, S.C. on October 23, 2008.
He was born in Chester, S.C. on October 16, 1925, the son of the late J.Henry and Pearl Anderson Von Hollen.
A veteran of World War II, he was a graduate of Presbyterian College, the University of Georgia and the Louisiana State University School of Banking. He joined M.S. Bailey and Son, Bankers in 1948 and retired from the Presidency of the bank in 1988.
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Von Hollen was active in church and civic affairs, having served as an Elder and Treasurer of First Presbyterian Church, as President of the Clinton Kiwanis Club, President of the Clinton Chamber of Commerce, President of the United Way, Chairman of the board of trustees of Laurens County School District 56, treasurer of the Clinton YMCA, director of the Clinton Newberry Natural Gas Authority, President of the South Carolina Student Loan Association, President of the Clinton Cotillion Club, Trustee of the Laurens County Library and a director of the South Carolina Bankers Association.
In 1960 Mr. Von Hollen was named Clinton’s Young Man of the Year, and as Clinton’s Citizen of the Year by the Clinton Lions Club in 1972.
He is survived by sons, Dirke Von Hollen and wife Katherine of Savannah, GA, and Stephen Von Hollen and wife Julie Ann of Columbia, S.C.; a daughter, Nancy V. Richards and husband Christopher of Columbia, S.C.; three grandchildren, John Von Hollen of Atlanta, GA, Hayley Von Hollen of Boone, N.C., and Eric Von Hollen of Columbia, S.C.; and a sister, Eloise V. Blalock of Clinton, S.C.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Sunday, October 26th at 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Clinton Museum, P.O. Drawer 748 / 400 North Broad Street, Clinton, S.C. 29325 or to the charity of one’s choice.
