Sue Barnes Stephens, age 80, of 215 Grandview Acres went to her heavenly home on Friday, August 08, 2008. She and her late husband, O.L. Stephens, Jr., had a passionate love affair for forty years.
She was born in Laurens County and was a daughter of the late Mark and Susie Brown Barnes. She graduated from Laurens High and was quite athletic, winning trophies in softball and bowling. She particularly relished driving fast. Sue studied Bible at USC, and was a devout Christian who lived her faith and epitomized the virtuous woman. She taught Sunday School and sang in the choir for sixty years. She loved Southern Gospel music and sang with two groups, the Sounds of Joy and the Belltones, with whom she recorded. Beyond her duties at the Frampton Hall and Presbyterian Home, she took a personal interest in the patients, driving them to doctor’s appointments and taking them out for meals.
Sue had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to play practical jokes. Sue never met a stranger and graciously offered her hospitality, “adopting” Hugh Jacobs, Billy Joe Oakley, and Janice Hames as her own. The family is greatly appreciative of the friendship and care provided by Ruth Baldwin.
Surviving are one son, Dr. Russell (Rusty) Stephens of the home and Augusta, GA; one daughter, Lana Stephens of Jacksonville, FL; one brother, Lewis Barnes of Clinton; one sister, Sara Arnold of Monks Corner; two grandchildren, Jason Bundrick and wife Karan, Brantlee Connell and husband Jon.
