The Thomas Aurelius Stallworth

The Rev. Dr. Thomas Aurelius Stallworth, 74, of 306 W. Walnut, died Monday morning, May 14, 2007.
The son of the late Marie Warren Risse and Thomas L. Stallworth, he was born in Atlanta on February 26, 1933.
In 1955 he received his B.A. degree from Presbyterian College where he served as ROTC Battalion Commander in his senior year. He received a B.D. from Columbia Theological Seminary in 1958 and a Th.M. from Union-PSCE in Richmond, Va., in 1965. He was honored with a Doctor of Divinity degree from Presbyterian College 1996.
He married Mary Hopkins in York on June 16, 1956. She survives.
After serving a pastorate at the First Presbyterian Church in Rome, Georgia, he returned to his alma mater where during the next thirty-six years he served in many positions including chaplain, professor of Religion and Philosophy, Dean of Students, soccer coach, and Director of Alumni Affairs. The respect his students had for his teaching was reflected in the fact that the Presbyterian College yearbook was dedicated to him on three occasions. He directed the Summer Program for Young People in Montreat, N.C. for several summers, was a founding member of the Pastoral Care Committee of the South Carolina Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, and served on the Alumni Board of Columbia Seminary. He was a co-founder of the PC ROTC Alumni Association. Following his retirement he became Parish Associate at the First Presbyterian Church in Clinton and also served on the board of the Clinton YMCA.
He served the larger Presbyterian Church over the years as moderator of Cherokee Presbytery and the Synod of the South Atlantic.
He will be remembered as a faithful teacher, counselor, colleague, and a friend of the Presbyterian College family and the Clinton community.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Andy and Becky Stallworth of Charleston; a daughter, Anne Stallworth Ballenger of Greenville; and four grandchildren, Max Avant and Catherine Brice Stallworth of Charleston and Mary Frances Hopkins Ballenger and Cooper Marie Ballenger of Greenville.
Memorial services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Clinton at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. The family will receive friends in the church Fellowship Hall immediately following the service.
