Velma Pearl Beaty Powell, 84, wife of Leo Vernon Powell for 64 ½ years, was born in Buffalo, NY and reared in Charleston, SC, the daughter of Joseph Acre Beaty and Martha Pearl Kitchen Beaty. She passed away at Greenville Memorial Hospital on Saturday, March 24, 2007 as the result of a deep stroke suffered three days earlier.
A graduate of Meminger High School and North Greenville Junior College with emphasis on piano performance, she had a career as Cash Auditor for Sam Soloman for 6 years and as a bookkeeper for Jordan Oil and in Food services at Ridgecrest Baptist Assembly, Hotel Mary Musgrove, Presbyterian College’s Judd Hall, Newberry College Dining Hall, McNinch’s Appliances, Dr. Holcombe’s Optometry Office and Vernon’s Motel and Restaurant.
She is survived by her husband and two sons, Joseph Steven Powell (Susan) of Issaquah, WA and Robert D. (Bob) Powell (Carolyn) of Easley, SC; also granddaughter, Elizabeth of Salem, Oregon, grandson, Robert W. Powell (Austine) of Bothel, WA, grandson, Robert V. (Bobby) Powell (Jennifer) of Greenville, SC; two great granddaughters, Kelsie Lee and Sorryn of Salem, Oregon, two step-granddaughters, Jennifer Faris and Karin Hills (Randy) and step great grandson, Chance Hills and step-great granddaughter Chelsea Hills, all of WA. She is also survived by seven nephews and five nieces.
Velma was predeceased by four sisters and four brothers.
Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in the Pinelawn Memory Gardens in Clinton with The Reverend Doctors Bev Kennedy and Russell Dean presiding.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Gray Funeral Home of Clinton.
The family is most appreciative of the many kindnesses by friends and organizations.
