Dateline – Whitmire, SC
Vivian Victoria Bumgarner, age 92, of 6443 Whitmire Highway, passed away on Friday, October 18, 2013 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Union County and was the daughter of Edward and Laura Trammell.
She is survived by her husband, Edward Eugene “Gene”; her son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Donna Bumgarner; her grandchildren, Michael Bumgarner and his girlfriend Stacey Zobel of Whitmire, Michelle Moore and her husband Rich of Whitmire, and Jeremy Bumgarner and his girlfriend Cindy Burton of Smithtown, New York, and her cat Phoebe.
She was called home to join her brothers, Robert Trammell and Jimmy Trammell and her sisters, Ida Mae English, Jeanette Trammell, Lily Stewart, and Beula Collier, as well as her son, Ronnie Bumgarner and his wife, Brenda.
Mrs. Bumgarner was the oldest member of Bethesda Baptist Church; she was baptized there when she was 10 years old and she served there faithfully all her life. She was active as a nursery worker, WMU member, and Bible School Worker. She was the first one to visit, send a card, or provide a dish for any member of the congregation who had a need. She remembered everyone’s birthday from the youngest to the oldest, and she often mailed cards to those who no longer lived in Whitmire and attended the church. She was always there for others; she never said “no” when a need arose. She did it because she cared about others and she enjoyed it.
She loved her family and enjoyed cooking family dinners at her house for any occasion. Everyone who came to her house was fed. She always had something sweet for her visitors. She was married for 70 years and she enjoyed spending time with her husband. She loved to read, tend to her flowers, crochet, and talking on the phone. In the early morning hours and in the evenings, she loved to sit on the porch and watch the cars go by with him or her grandchildren. She loved to shop and she made a trip to Hamrick’s every season. She enjoyed fishing and loved to watch the Atlanta Braves on television. She enjoyed her music, and she often sang while she was working or riding. She had three grandchildren, but everyone called her “Nanny”. She always had a dollar or a handful of candy to give to her “other children.”
The memorial service will be held on Monday, October 21st at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Whitmire. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family is at the home of Glenn and Donna Bumgarner of Coleman Aughtry Road, Whitmire, SC 29178.
