Wallace Nat Meggs, Sr., age 88, of 129 Copeland Circle died Monday, January 21, 2008 at the Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center.
He was born in Florence County and was the son of the late Will and Ruth Gardner Meggs.
Mr. Meggs was employed as an engineer by the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad and retired after 42 years of service. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Laurens, SC and was a longtime member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Florence, SC. In December, Mr. Meggs was honored with a 60 year pen as a Master Mason and was a member of the Hampton Lodge in Florence, SC. He also proudly served his country during World War II as a Fire Controlman with the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Elizabeth Pruitt Meggs of the home; two sons, Dr. William Joel Meggs of Greenville, NC and Wally Meggs of Laurens; a daughter, Elizabeth Pruitt Meggs Lever of Lexington; a sister, Ruth Meggs Lane of Rockville, Maryland; eleven grandchildren, Jason Meggs of Berkley, CA, Ben Meggs of Wilmington, NC, Tom Meggs of New York, NY, Andrew Meggs of Annandale, VA; Elizabeth Meggs of New York, NY, James Lever of Charlotte, NC, Jennifer Elrod of Lexington, Abegail Sharpe of Anderson, Adriene Sorrenson of Lexington, Julianne Stokes of Charleston and Catherine Meggs of Charleston; three great grandchildren, Hannah Elrod, Tripp Sorrenson and Heather Lever.
He was predeceased by a son, Phillip Baxter Meggs and a grandson, Timothy Brandon Lever.
Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, Jan. 24th at 10:30 a.m. at Westview Memorial Park followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church.
The family will receive friends Thursday immediately following the memorial service.
