Walter Senn Ramage, 83, passed into eternity on Monday, December 5 leaving behind his wife of 61 years, Harriet Patterson Ramage, and two daughters, Rita Ramage Wells and husband Bill, and Elizabeth Ramage Derby and four grandchildren, Ann Wells, Margaret Derby, Walter Derby and Kathryn Wells.
Walter grew up in Laurens County. He finished at Laurens High School in 1952 with his one claim to fame that he caught one pass in all his years of high school football. He graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Husbandry, which he bragged taught him how to pick out a great steak, and he performed with two precision military drill units. Upon finishing college, he served in the U.S. Army for six months and in the reserves for many years after.
He was employed with Proctor and Gamble for four years and spent the next 30 years in sales and marketing with Laurens Glass Company, and eventually Ball Corp., rising to the position of Vice President of Sales. For many years he owned The Men’s Shop in Laurens. He served on the board of The Blood Collection in Greenville and the original Upstate Alliance, for which he received the Governor’s Award. As a partner with his wife, he assisted in the development of the Ferguson Meditation Garden at Laurens County Hospital. He served 12 years on the Laurens County Memorial Hospital Board, 2 of those as Chairman. Additionally, he was an active member of Lauren’s First United Methodist Church and oversaw the renovation of the sanctuary.
Walter was both a “man’s man” and a ladies’ man. He never met a stranger and was loved by all he met. His goodness showed in the way he dealt with friends and strangers; he had a way of making every person he met feel special. He was a fixture – in his work, in the community, and in the lives and hearts of all who knew and loved him.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 8th at 11 AM at the First UMC of Laurens.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 PM at Gray Funeral Home of Laurens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Laurens First United Methodist Church, Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center and/or the Ferguson Meditation Garden.
