William O. "Coach Lefty" Johnson

William O. "Coach Lefty" Johnson, age 80, of 198 Nance Street, passed away Thursday, July 23, 2015 at his home.
He was born in Winnsboro, South Carolina and was the son of the late Ralph O. and Nell Hendrix Johnson.
Coach Johnson was a graduate of Whitmire High School, Class of 1952. He earned his B.S. Degree from Presbyterian College, his Master of Arts in Education from Western Carolina University and his Education Specialist Degree from Winthrop University. During his twenty year coaching and teaching career, he served as Principal and Athletic Director of Whitmire High School, he coached football, baseball, and girls basketball. During that time he received State Coach of the Year, twice for football, and Conference Coach of the Year three times in baseball, he also coached the Whitmire Football Team to a State Championship and the Whitmire Baseball Team to two Championships, and coached in the North South All Star Game in 1978. In 2003 he received “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Newberry Touchdown Club, in 2002 “The Bob Waters Award” from Presbyterian College and was inducted into the Whitmire High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
He is a US Army Veteran and Past Company Commander of the Whitmire National Guard. He was a member and Elder Emeritus of the Whitmire Presbyterian Church and taught the Men’s Bible Class for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Kitcy Farah Johnson, of the home; his daughter, Hollis Farah Johnson of Newberry, SC; his sisters, Eloise Johnson Morelli of Naples, Italy and Carolyn Johnson Williams of Concord, NC.
He was predeceased by his brother, Ralph O. Johnson, Jr. and his sister, Doris Johnson Lee.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 26th at 2:30 PM at the Whitmire Community School Gymnasium.
The family will receive friends after the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Whitmire Presbyterian Church, PO Box 276, Whitmire, SC 29178 or to the Whitmire Rescue Squad, 26350 SC Hwy 121, Whitmire, SC 29178.
