William Smith “Smitty” Summer, Sr. age 85, of 412 Pickens Street passed away Sunday, March 5th at the Greenville Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Newberry, SC and was a son of the late George Walter Summer III and the late Ollie Smith Summer.
Mr. Summer was retired from Greenwood Mills, was a member of the First Baptist Church of Joanna, a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War having served in the 11th Airborne, 187th RCB and received the Bronze Star. He also was a member of the Magnolia Masonic Lodge #355, the Hejaz Shrine Club and the VFW Post. He served as Director of the Joanna Textile Festival and was a founder of District 55 and 56 Rescue Squad.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mildred Pitts Summer of the home; two sons, Clay Summer (Darlene) of Greenwood, Billy Summer of Joanna and his former daughter-in-law, Dianne Summer of Clinton; a daughter, Tracy Long (Eric); four grandchildren, Kelly Summer, Kevin Summer, Caroline Long and Alex Summer; three great-grandchildren, Hayden Hill, Emeri Summer, Raylan Summer; and his beloved dog, “Baby”.
He was predeceased by a brother, George Walter Summer, Sr.; and a granddaughter, Adrian Summer.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 8th at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Joanna with interment in Rosemont Cemetery in Newberry, SC with Military Honors.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Gray Funeral Home in Clinton.
