Williene Reeves Hughes, age 95, a resident of the Presbyterian Home and widow of Walter Moorhead Hughes, Sr., died Tuesday, July 26, 2011.
Born in Spartanburg County, she was the daughter of the late Claude Augustus and Eula Mae Knight Reeves. Mrs. Hughes was a graduate of Winthrop College, Class of 1937, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree. She was the Executive Secretary of four Presbyterian College Presidents.
Mrs. Hughes was an active member of Broad Street United Methodist Church for 68 years where she served on many committees and circles. She was a member of the Sun Bonnet Garden Club and many Bridge Clubs. She had a passion for travel, music and literature.
Mrs. Hughes was blessed by the kindness, love, and support of the staff and residents of the Presbyterian Home, Laurens County Hospice, and the community at large. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and was dearly loved by her family. Her blindness in later years was treated as a transition of life.
She is survived by a daughter, Caroline Butler Hughes; a son, Walter Moorhead Hughes, Jr. and wife Patricia E. Sadler and their children, Walter Moorhead Hughes, III, Virginia Bradley Hughes and Caroline Sadler Hughes. Being the last surviving member of her family, she was predeceased by two brothers, Claude L. Reeves and John M. Reeves.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 27th at 10:30 a.m. at Broad Street United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church in the Cunningham Center following the service.
